Sacrifice, Scripture, & Substitution. Readings in Ancient Judaism and Christianity
This collection of essays focuses on sacrifice in the context of Jewish and Christian scripture and is inspired by the thought and writings of Rene Girard. The contributors engage in a dialogue with Girard in their search for answers to key questions about the relation between religion and violence.

The book is divided into two parts. The first opens with a conversation in which Rene Girard and Sandor Goodhart explore the relation between imitation and violence throughout human history, especially in religious culture. It is followed by essays on the subject of sacrifice contributed by some of the most distinguished scholars in the field, including Bruce Chilton, Robert Daly, Louis Feldman, Michael Fishbane, Erich Gruen, and Alan Segal. The second part contains essays on specific scriptural texts (Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac in Genesis 22 and the book of Job in the Jewish tradition, the Gospel and Epistles in the Christian tradition). The authors explore new ways of applying Girardian analysis to episodes of sacrifice and scapegoating, demonstrating that fertile ground remains to further our understanding of violence in the Hebrew and Christian scriptures.

Ausloos, Hans

The Cambridge companion to Biblical Interpretation
This book provides the first complete guide for students to the present state of biblical studies. The twenty-one specially commissioned chapters are written by established scholars from North America and Britain, and represent both traditional and contemporary points of view. The chapters in Part One cover all the methods and approaches currently practised in the academic study of the Bible, while those in Part Two examine the major categories of books in the Bible from the perspective of recent scholarship - e.g. historical books of the Old Testament, Gospels, prophetic literature. Major issues raised are: the relation of modern 'critical' study of the Bible to 'pre-critical' and 'post-critical' approaches; the place of history in the study of the Bible; feminist, liberationist and new historicist concerns; the relation of Christian and Jewish scholarship; and recent interest in the Bible as literature.

See You in the Bible.

The Last Things. Biblical & Theological Perspectives on Eschatology
In modern theology the last things of traditional Christian doctrine have largely been ignored or replaced with various metaphysical, psychological, or ethical reinterpretations of Christianity. This volume takes the biblical vision of the future seriously once again, explaining the significance of Christian eschatology for the faith and theology of the contemporary church. Worstelen met het Woord. Tegendraadse bijbellezingen

Are we Amused? Humour about Women in the Biblical Worlds
Biblical humor about women and gender remains elusive for many readers, for its recognition may imply the realization that it's a cruel and disrespectful humor, ridicule rather than good-natured fun. But viewing humor as social critique, as is largely done in the essays in this volume, with respect to both the texts read and their actual or implied author, may be fun as well as significant for understanding the biblical worlds. As most of the essays show, writing about women is writing about men as well. In other words, it is writing about gender roles. The critique of women, womanhood and femaleness implied by biblical and related texts serves, in equal measure, as a critique of men, manhood and maleness in the texts, of the texts authors, and of the texts' commentators and readers. Contributors include Scott Spencer, Mary Shields, Kathleen O'Connor, Toni Craven, Kathy Williams, Athalya Brenner, Gale Yee, Amy-Jill Levine, and Esther Fuchs.

A feminist companion to bliblical methodologies, approaches and strategies
A Feminist Companion to Reading the Bible: Approaches, Methods and Strategies forms a conclusion to the series of 10 volumes published in the groundbreaking Feminist Companion to the Bible since 1993. Not only is this the companion to the Companion, but, it is at the same time the forerunner and companion to a second series of nine volumes of the Feminist Companion. In all, there will be a unique collection of 20 volumes representing the enormous range of influence that feminist criticism has come to have in biblical studies. Anchored always in particular biblical texts, the essays in this multi-authored Companion to Reading the Bible have a distinct methodological slant, reflecting the numerous developments in feminist criticism that have occurred since the first books in the series were published, and forming an indispensable handbook for every biblical scholar and student today.

Brettler, Marc Zvi, Peter Enns, Daniel J. Harrington, S.J.
The Bible and the Believer: How to Read the Bible Critically and Religiously
How can one read the Bible both critically and religiously? To answer that question, The Bible and the Believer enlists one Jewish, one Catholic, and one Protestant biblical scholar who explain and illustrate how to read the Hebrew Bible/Tanakh/Old Testament critically and religiously in light of their own religious traditions. The problem they deal with not only haunts biblical scholarship today but also disturbs students and others exposed to biblical criticism for the first time in university courses or through reading. Failure to deal with the problem often results in rejection of either the critical approach or the religious approach (or both). Brettler, Enns, and Harrington demonstrate how to read the Bible critically through the lens of tradition, guiding readers through the history of interpretation as well as the history of biblical exegesis within each faith.

Brock, Brian
Singing the Ethos of God.On the Place of Christian Ethics in Scripture
Noting that academic biblical scholars and Christian ethicists have been methodologically estranged for some decades now, Brian Brock seeks to reframe the whole Bible-and-ethics discussion in terms of this question: What role does the Bible play in God's generation of a holy people -- and how do we participate in that regeneration?

Brock first examines various major contemporary thinkers on the Bible and Christian ethics, including John Howard Yoder, Brevard Childs, John Webster, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer. He then undertakes major discussions of Augustine and Martin Luther, unpacking their interpretation of the Psalms. Finally, Brock articulates the processes of renewal in God's people. His close study of a few individual psalms shows how we enter the world of praise in which all human life is comprehended within God's work -- and is thus renewed. Immersion in the exegetical tradition of the Christian faith, Brock argues, must be the heart and soul of theology and ethics.

Burt, Robert A.
In the Whirlwind. God and Humanity in Conflict
Inspired by a passion for biblical as well as constitutional scholarship, in this bold exploration Yale Law Professor Robert A. Burt conceptualizes the political theory of the Hebrew and Christian Bibles. God's authority as expressed in these accounts is not a given. It is no less inherently problematic and in need of justification than the legitimacy of secular government. In recounting the rich narratives of key biblical figures--from Adam and Eve to Noah, Cain, Abraham, Moses, Job, and Jesus-- In the Whirlwind paints a surprising picture of the ambivalent, mutually dependent relationship between God and his peoples.

Taking the Hebrew and Christian Bibles as a unified whole, Burt traces God's relationship with humanity as it evolves from complete harmony at the outset to continual struggle. In almost every case, God insists on unconditional obedience, while humanity withholds submission and holds God accountable for his promises. Contemporary political theory aims for perfect justice. The Bible, Burt shows, does not make this assumption. Justice in the biblical account is an imperfect process grounded in human--and divine--limitation. Burt suggests that we consider the lessons of this tension as we try to negotiate the power struggles within secular governments, and also the conflicts roiling our public and private lives.

Breaking Boundaries. Female Biblical Interpreters Who Challenged the Status Quo
While people often believe that the feminist movements in Britain and North America began in the late twentieth century, this is certainly not the case. Women throughout the centuries have sought to break out of the constraints that their societies deemed appropriate for them. For interpreters in the Christian tradition, this often meant examining biblical texts that had been understood in ways that demeaned women and using their interpretations to encourage women to break out of their culturally proscribed spheres. The essays in this volume are drawn from the Recovering Female Interpreters of the Bible Consultation at the SBL Annual Meeting and from sessions on female interpreters of Scripture at the Canadian Society of Biblical Studies. The essays address female interpreters of the Bible such as Eudocia and Anna Jameson whose publications have been largely ignored in the fields of the history of biblical interpretation and reception history. Through their publications these women used their interpretive and theological skills to break the boundaries that previous interpretations of the Bible and their societies imposed upon them.

Carmichael, C.
Sex & Religion in the Bible
If we look to the Bible for historical accounts of ancient life, we make a profound error. So contends Calum Carmichael in this original and incisive reading of some of the Hebrew Bible and New Testament's most famous narratives. Sifting through the imaginative layers of these texts with an uncanny sensitivity and a panoptic critical eye, he unearths patterns connecting disparate passages, providing fascinating insights into how ideas were expressed, received, and transformed in the ancient Near East. Rather than attempting a historical reconstruction, Carmichael brilliantly reveals the profound creativity of the biblical authors. Ranging from Jacob's encounter with Leah to the marriage at Cana to Jesus' encounter with the woman at the well, these readings demonstrate the remarkable subtlety and sophistication of the biblical views on marriage, sexuality, fertility, impurity, creation, and love. In doing so, they also make a compelling case for the integral link between sexual morality and Israelite identity.

Charlesworth, J.H.
The Good & Evil Serpent : How a Universal Symbol Became Christianized
In a perplexing passage from the "Gospel of John", Jesus is likened to the most reviled creature in Christian symbology: the snake. Attempting to understand how the Fourth Evangelist could have made such a surprising analogy, James H. Charlesworth has spent nearly a decade combing through the vast array of references to serpents in the ancient world - from the Bible and other religious texts to ancient statuary and jewelry. Charlesworth has arrived at a surprising conclusion: not only was the serpent a widespread symbol throughout the world, but its meanings were both subtle and varied. In fact, the serpent of ancient times was more often associated with positive attributes like healing and eternal life than it was with negative meanings.

This pathbreaking book explores in plentiful detail the symbol of the serpent from 40,000 BCE to the present, and from diverse regions in the world. In doing so it emphasizes the creativity of the biblical authors' use of symbols and argues that we must today reexamine our own archetypal conceptions with comparable creativity.

Davies , Eryl Wynn
Biblical Criticism, a guide for the perplexed
This Guide for the Perplexed will demonstrate how modern biblical scholars have expressed dissatisfaction with a one-sided historical-critical approach to biblical texts and have argued that developments in secular literary theory should be applied in biblical studies. Whereas the historical-critical approach was concerned with the moment of a text's production (authorship, date, place of writing etc), the literary approach is concerned with the moment of the text's reception. Eryl W. Davies shows how and why approaches such as 'reader-response criticism', 'feminist criticism', 'ideological criticism', 'canonical criticism' and 'post-colonial criticism' are now becoming more popular in many quarters. The volume explains to the uninitiated in a readable and accessible form how strategies originally derived from secular literary criticism have been adopted by biblical scholars in order to understand the text of Scripture and to appreciate its relevance.

Reading the Bible, Transforming Conflict
Van 27.50 voor 19.50

An interaction between biblical studies and communication studies that demonstrates how understanding situations of conflict in the Bible can help develop skills in dealing with conflict today.

Each of eleven chapters presents a biblical story (from Adam and Eve through the letters of Paul) that examines some aspect of conflict intrapersonal, interpersonal, or between humans and God. Each chapter takes up a particular theme the nature of conflict, the role of identity, the need for forgiveness, the use of power, the potential of mediation, the skills of negotiation, the possibility of reconciliation with the goal of helping students learn how to be in right relationship with one another and with God.

Each chapter includes discussion questions, suggested readings, and sidebars to form an attractive text for undergraduates and general readers. Accessible language and tools to engage students are used throughout.

Dubbink, Joep (red)
Bijbelse Theologie

Eberhart, C.A.
The Sacrifice of Jesus. Understanding Atonement Biblically
Christian A. Eberhart makes a decisive contribution to these debates by carefully and clearly examining the Old Testament metaphors of sacrifice and atonement and the ways these metaphors were taken over by early Christians to speak of the significance of Christ. Eberhart shows that these New Testament appropriations have been misunderstood as requiring a logic of necessary violence; rather they speak to larger Christological themes concerning the whole mission and life of Jesus.

Feldmeier, R., H. Spieckermann
God of the Living, A Biblical Theology
Noted biblical scholars Reinhard Feldmeier and Hermann Spieckermann provide a comprehensive theology of the God of the Christian Bible. A remarkable achievement, this book joins together the very best of Old and New Testament scholarship to craft a comprehensive biblical theology. Feldmeier and Spieckermann wrestle with the whole of scripture to give a definitive and decisive voice to the church's central mission - bearing witness to the living God. Both historical and systematic, the book explores God's multifaceted, complex, and sometimes contradictory character presented in the scriptures. Yet, whether in wrath or reconciliation, judgement or justification, suffering or salvation, God has given and shares divine life in the person of Jesus Christ. Thus, Feldmeier and Spieckermann uncover God's profound affirmation of human life, as the God of the living - the God of the Bible - finds fulfillment in relation to the living partners of his own creation.

Fokkelman, Jan P., Wim Weren (red.)

The Bible Says So!, From Simple Answers to Insightful Understanding
Do you sometimes hear people quote passages from the Bible to support their point of view or to justify a particular value or action? Often, passages are taken out of context, infused with meaning that reflects today's world, and interpreted to fit our present frame of reference. However, this does injustice to the Bible and to the messages that its writers were trying to convey. Only when we read between the lines, using the techniques of biblical scholars, can we insightfully grasp what the Bible says. How ironic that we often refer to this holy book as if its words were written for us in our times when, indeed, biblical writings were not even considered holy when they were first recorded, nor did biblical authors ever imagine how lasting their words would be. In this book, you will gain valuable insights about the origins of well-known biblical stories, and you will discover what meanings their authors most likely intended, given the circumstances behind their words. Is it possible to apply teachings from the Bible to our world today, given the vast differences between biblical times and ours? Absolutely! Does the Bible remain relevant? Absolutely! Readers will come to appreciate the Bible and its diverse writings with a whole new level of understanding and insight.

The Bible Now. Homosexuality, Abortion, Women, Death Penalty, Earth
In The Bible Now, two respected biblical scholars tell us carefully what the Bible says or does not say about a wide range of issues--including homosexuality, abortion, women's status, capital punishment, and the environment. In fascinating passages that shed new light on some of today's most passionate disputes, the authors reveal how the Bible is frequently misunderstood, misquoted, mistranslated, and misused. For instance, those who quote the Bible in condemning homosexuality often cite the story of Sodom, and those who favor homosexuality point to David's lament over the death of Jonathan. But as the authors show, neither passage is clearly about homosexuality, and these texts do not offer solid footing on which to make an argument. Readers learn that female homosexuality is not prohibited--only male homosexuality. And on the subject of abortion, the Bible is practically silent, with one extraordinary exception. The Bible has inspired people to do great good but has also been used by people to do great harm, so it is vitally important for us to pay attention to it--and to get it right

Ds.

Grindheim , Sigurd
Introducing Biblical Theology
How do the different books of the Christian bible contribute to telling the story of God's salvation in Jesus Christ? How can the diverse and sometimes confusing range of perspectives in the bible join together in one picture? Sigurd Grindheim shows students how this picture can be seen as that of the Triune God, the God who interacts. God makes human beings who enjoy a peaceful relationship with him. This relationship is broken because of sin, but God continues to reach out to human beings through covenants. Human failure to be faithful shows that God needs to intervene in a more direct way. In his son Jesus Christ, he comes to earth and brings reconciliation. Grindheim draws on insights from scholarship and tradition to answer the major questions and presents them in a highly accessible form, using examples, revision questions and charts. This book is written specifically for students at the start of courses in the Bible, Theology and Ministry, and for those searching for a deeper understanding of the theology of the Christian bible.

Hahn, Scott W.
Kinship by Covenant: A Canonical Approach to the Fulfillment of Gods Saving Promises
While the canonical scriptures were produced over many centuries and represent a diverse library of texts, they are unified by stories of divine covenants and their implications for God's people. In this deeply researched and thoughtful book, Scott Hahn shows how covenant, as an overarching theme, makes possible a coherent reading of the diverse traditions found within the canonical scriptures. Biblical covenants, though varied in form and content, all serve the purpose of extending sacred bonds of kinship, Hahn explains. Specifically, divine covenants form and shape a father-son bond between God and the chosen people. Biblical narratives turn on that fact, and biblical theology depends upon it. With meticulous attention to detail, the author demonstrates how divine son ship represents a covenant relationship with God that has been consistent throughout salvation history. A canonical reading of this divine plan reveals an illuminating pattern of promise and fulfillment in both the Old and New Testaments. God's saving mercies are based upon his sworn commitments, which he keeps even when his people break the covenant.

A Companion to Biblical Interpretation in Early Judaism
A Companion to Biblical Interpretation in Early Judaism presents eighteen commissioned articles on biblical exegesis in early Judaism, covering the period after the Hebrew Bible was written and before the beginning of rabbinic Judaism.

The essays, all written by experts in the field, are arranged in seven categories: Hebrew Bible, Rewritten Bible, Qumran Literature, Apocalyptic Literature and Testaments, Wisdom Literature, Hellenistic Judaism, and Biblical Interpretation in Antiquity. Together these essays provide a systematic and comprehensive introduction to the diverse modes of scriptural interpretation practiced by a variegated and dynamic spectrum of Jewish groups in the Hellenistic and early Roman eras.

Biblical Hermeneutics
SCM Studyguide to Biblical Hermeneutics offers entry-level undergraduates a framework for interpreting the Bible. The book goes beyond offering guidance on how to do exegesis, and is intended as a practical tool to help readers develop good interpretative strategies for themselves. As such it features pedagogical tools such as Try it Out boxes to assist students to develop a tested and thought - through overall interpretative strategy of their own. Market-tested to ensure a good coverage of the typical topics found on a standard level-one hermeneutics course, this "Studyguide" is designed as a practical and comprehensive companion to coursework, be that within a secular institution, a theological institution or within Church reading groups. The authors set out from the beginning to make clear that interpretation of the Bible is largely affected by the reader's own situation and therefore, the text is designed to guide the reader through the myriad of accepted methods of interpretation, no matter what the reader's own perspective or situation may be.

The Impact of Unit Delimitation on Exegesis
This volume contains papers dealing with the impact of unit delimitation on exegesis. Pargraph markers play an important role in literature, this is illustrated by means of the examples of Mark 12:13-27 and Romans 1:21-25. The setumah after Isaiah 8:16 is significant for understanding the making of the Hebrew Bible. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the text divisions in the Book of Daniel guide the reading of the text. The demarcation of hymns and prayers in the prophets is illustrated by the examples of Hosea 6:1-3 and Isaiah 42:10-12. Unit delimitation is taken up for the theory of an acrostichon in Nahum 1. Also discussed is the delimitation of units in Genesis, Isaiah 56:1-9, and Jeremiah and Habakkuk

'Come Out My People!' God's Call Out of Empire in the Bible and Beyond
Van 31.95 voor 24.50

A landmark work in biblical interpretation explores the relation between two competing "religions"the religion of "creation" and the religion of "empire"and the implications for today.

In this sweeping and transformative approach to biblical interpretation, Wes Howard-Brook presents the Bible as a struggle between two competing "religions": not "Judaism" and "Christianity," but the "religion of creation" versus the "religion of empire." Throughout the Hebrew Scriptures, these two religions battled for the hearts and minds of the people in claiming radically divergent views of who YHWH is and what it looks like to be YHWH's people. As Wes Howard-Brook shows, Jesus proclaimed and embodied one of these views--the "religion of creation"--and denounced the "religion of empire." Though he was killed by the upholders of empire, his resurrection was the definitive vindication of the religion of creation. As a consequence, those who follow his path can accept no violence or domination toward people or creation in his name.

While many recent scholars have studied the imperial context of the New Testament, this is the first book to trace this theme throughout the entire Bible. As such, it sets a challenge for the future of biblical studies, while also defining a new framework for radical discipleship in our time.

Inch, M.A.
Echoes of the Shema and Our Father's Footprints
This volume contains two closely related studies: Echoes of the Shema and Our Father's Footprints.

The term Shema is derived from the initial word to hear in the Old Testament: "Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one" (Deut. 6:4). Hence, God is deserving of ardent adoration and unqualified commitment. Morris A. Inch discusses God as Spirit, Light, and Love and also touches on divine holiness, grace, and compassion. The second study picks up with Jesus' allusion to God as our Father (Matt. 6:9). While this reference is primarily related to his authority, Jesus pointedly ties in his benevolent character. In this regard, he exclaims: "If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father give good gifts to those who ask him!" (Matt. 7:11). This quotation invites us to reflect on such associated themes as God's faithfulness, generosity, resolve, forgiveness, and creativity. Echoes of the Shema and Our Father's Footprints will be a useful text for those interested in exploring the inviting realm of biblical theology.

Kessler, E.
Bound by the Bible. Jews, Christians, and the Sacrifice of Isaac
The Sacrifice of Isaac is one of the most well-known stories in the Bible. It is also a shocking account of how Abraham's faith in God was demonstrated by a willingness to sacrifice his long-awaited son at God's command. This story has been a source of fascination for Jews and Christians for many centuries and here, Edward Kessler offers an enthralling account of Jewish and Christian interpretations of this biblical story. For understandable reasons, it has been assumed that Judaism influenced Christian interpretation but relatively little attention has been given to the question of the influence of Christianity upon Judaism. Kessler provides an insight into this absorbing two-way encounter and argues that neither Jewish nor Christian interpretations can be understood properly without reference to the other. As Jews and Christians lived, and continue to live, in a biblically orientated culture, Kessler shows how both were 'bound by the bible'.

Autobiographical Biblical Criticism. Between Text and Self, learning to read
The autobiographical turn in biblical criticism reveals the interpreters 'I' and reclaims it as an essential critical category, issuing a challenge to traditional, 'objective' criticism. Pioneers in the field have contributed essays both practical and theoretical. They offer stimulating autobiographical re-readings of Hebrew Bible and New Testament texts, and address hermeneutical issues that are at stake in this young field of criticism.

Ingrid Rosa Kitzberger has published widely in feminist interpretation and reader response criticism. She is the editor of The Personal Voice in Biblical Interpretation (Routledge, 1999)

The Personal Voice in Biblical Interpretation
Reading and interpreting the Bible, whether as an 'ordinary' or critical reader, has always been strongly influenced by a person's own experience. Personal voice criticism takes seriously into account and makes explicit the role of the interpreter's personal voice within the process of deciding on the meaning af a text.

The Personal Voice in Biblical Scholarship contains the original essays of distinguished Jewish and Christian scholars of the Hebrew Bible and the New Testament from all over the world and a variety of backgrounds. The contributions in this volume demonstrate the variety of ways in which the Bible can have meaning for different people. The contributors offer challenging new perspectives on the ancient biblical books and individual texts of the Torah, the prophets, the Gospels, (Pauline) letters and Revelation.

Method in Unit Delimitation
In this volume selected papers from several Pericope meetings have been combined into a thematic volume, dealing with the method of unit delimitation. A hitherto unnoticed Tibero-Palestinian manuscript from Paris is discussed, as well as the text divisions in the Leviticus and Joshua Codices from the Schoyen collection and a fifth-century lectionary. The volume closes with a proposal for a new polyglot Bible, containing data with regard to unit delimitation from our traditions, Hebrew, Greek, Syriac and Latin.

Studies in Scriptural Unit Division
Along with other contrbutions this volume brings together the papers read during the Second Pericope Meeting at the Rome, 2001 SBL conference. The Pericope series aims at making available the data on unit delimitation found in the ancient manuscripts of the Hebrew Bible, the Septuagint, the Peshitta and the Vulgate to Bible translators and exegetes and to evaluate these data for the benefit of biblical interpretation. It will contribute significantly to our understanding of the meaning of Scripture as it was written and understood in Antiquity.

Unit Delimitation in Biblical Hebrew and Northwest Semitic Literature
Scripture as written and read in antiquity Bible scholars and translators are often confronted with the problem of sectioning biblical texts. Until recently sentence division and paragraphing were largely left to the imagination of the individual scholar. This resulted in a wide range of different divisions of one and the same text. There is, however, a lot of long neglected evidence on how the ancient scribes themselves understood the structure of the texts they were transmitting.

Delimination Criticism
The first volume of the new Pericope series, Delimitation Criticism contains the papers read at a workshop of the Pericope Group during the First Meeting of the European Association for Biblical Studies, held at Utrecht, The Netherlands, 6-9 August 2000. The volume highlights the importance of the long-ignored unit delimitation markers in ancient manuscripts for the interpretation of Scripture. Much of the data presented here has never been published before and opens up fresh vistas for biblical scholarship.

Kugel, James L.
How to read the Bible. A Guide to Scripture, Then and Now
In How to Read the Bible, Harvard professor James Kugel leads the reader chapter by chapter through the "quiet revolution" of recent biblical scholarship, showing time and again how radically the interpretations of today's researchers differ from what people have always thought. The story of Adam and Eve, it turns out, was not originally about the 'Fall of Man'. The stories of Cain and Abel, Abraham and Sarah, and Jacob and Esau, were not, at their origin, about individual people at all but, rather, explanations of some feature of Israelite society as it existed centuries after these figures were said to have lived. Dinah was never raped - her story was created by an editor to solve a certain problem in Genesis. Moses probably did not divide the Red Sea in half. Whatever the original Ten Commandments might have been, scholars are quite sure they were different from the ones we have today. What's more, the people long supposed to have written various books of the Bible were not, in the current consensus, their real authors: David did not write the Psalms, Solomon did not write Proverbs or Ecclesiastes; indeed, there is scarcely a book in the Bible that is not the product of different, anonymous authors and editors working in different periods.

Such findings pose a serious problem for adherents of traditional, Bible-based faiths. Hiding from the discoveries of modern scholars seems dishonest, but accepting them means undermining much of the Bible's reliability and authority as the word of God. What to do? In his search for a solution, Kugel leads the reader back to a group of ancient biblical interpreters who flourished at the end of the biblical period. Far from naive, these interpreters consciously set out to depart from the original meaning of the Bible's various stories, laws, and prophecies - and they, Kugel argues, hold the key to solving the dilemma of reading the Bible today.

Theodicy in the World of the Bible
Is it justice when deities allow righteous human beings to suffer? This question has occupied the minds of theologians and philosophers for many centuries and is still hotly disputed. All kinds of argument have been developed to exonerate the 'good God' of any guilt in this respect. Since Leibniz it has become customary to describe such attempts as 'theodicy', the justification of God. In modern philosophical debate this use of 'theodicy' has been questioned. However, this volume shows that it is still a workable term for a concept that originated much earlier than is commonly realised. Experts from many disciplines follow the emergence of the theodicy problem from ancient Near Eastern texts of the second millennium BCE through biblical literature, from both Old and New Testament, intertestamental writings including Qumran, Philo Judaeus and rabbinic Judaism.

Historical Critical Method: A Guide for the Perplexed
This title offers an introduction to one of the core methods of approaching biblical texts. "Historical Critical Analysis" is the main way in which the Bible (both the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament and the New Testament) has been examined and read by scholars in the last century. The term refers to a range of methodologies which examine the origins of biblical texts, in relation to other contemporaneous texts, to form critical approaches and to questions of authorship, audience and authenticity. The aim is to get as close to the 'original text' and its 'original meaning' as possible.

For many years Historical Critical Method has been the cornerstone upon which biblical scholarship is built, even as modern studies examine other theoretical approaches to reading the text in history, tradition, and from different audience perspectives The Historical Critical Method still presents the crucial starting point for students and scholars.

Lyrics of Lament: From Tragedy to Transformation
From ancient cultures to our own world torn by division, violence, and deprivation, the rhythms and lyrics of an ancient art form--the lament--have provided an indispensable vehicle for women and men to give voice to their suffering, grief and protest against injustice. Nancy C. Lee surveys both lament in the Abrahamic sacred texts (Hebrew Bible, New Testament, Qur'an) and in 'the people's' laments expressed admirably by poets and popular singers in over thirty cultures worldwide today. This work encourages strategies for recovering processes of composing laments--toward political empowerment, social innovation, nonviolent justice, healing, and peace.

Legaspi, M. C.
The Death of Scripture and the Rise of Biblical Studies
The Bible has always been a contested legacy. Form late antiquity to the Refomation, debates about the Bible took place at the center of manifold movements that defined Western civilization. In the eigtheenth century, Europe's scriptural inheritance surfaced once again at a critical moment. During the Enlightenment, scholars guided by a new vision of a post-theological age did not simply investigate the Bible, they remade it. In place of the familiar scriptural Bibles that belonged to Christian and Jewish communities, they created a new form: the academic Bible. In this book, Michael Legaspi examines the creation of the academic Bible. Beginning with the fragmentation of biblical interpretation in the centuries after the Reformation, Legaspi shows how the weakening of scriptural authority in the Western churches altered the role of biblical interpretation. In contexts shaped by skepticism and religious strife, interpreters increasingly operated on the Bible as a text to be managed by critical tools. These developments prepared the way for scholars to formalize an approach to biblical study oriented toward the statist vision of the new universities and their sponsors.

Focusing on a renowned German scholar of the period, Johann David Michaelis (1717-1791), Legaspi explores the ways that critics reconceived authority of the Bible by creating an institutional framework for biblical interpretation designed to parallel-and replace-scriptural reading. This book offers a new account of the origins of biblical studies, illuminating the relation of the Bible to churchly readers, theological interpreters, academic critics, and people in between. It explains why, in an age of religious resurgence, modern biblical criticism may no longer be in a position to serve as the Bible's disciplinary gatekeeper.

McKenzie, S. L.
How to Read the Bible. History, Prophecy, Literature. Why Modern Readers Need to Know the Difference and What It Means for Faith Today
More people read the Bible than any other book and, as Steven McKenzie shows in this provocative volume, most of us misread it. McKenzie argues that to comprehend the Bible we must grasp the intentions of the biblical authors themselves - what sort of texts they thought they were writing and how they would have been understood by their contemporaries. McKenzie examines several genres that are typically misunderstood, offering careful readings of specific texts to show how the confusion arises, and how knowing the genre produces a correct reading. The book of Jonah, for example, offers many clues that it is meant as a humorous satire, not a straight-faced historical account of a man who was swallowed by a fish. Likewise, the very names "Adam" (man) and "Eve" (life) tell us that these are not historical characters, but figures who symbolize human origins. For anyone who takes reading the Bible seriously and who wants to get it right, this book will be enlightening.

McLean, B.H.
Biblical Interpretation and Philosophical Hermeneutics
This book applies philosophical hermeneutics to biblical studies. Whereas traditional studies of the Bible limit their analysis to the exploration of the texts' original historical sense, this book discusses how to move beyond these issues to a consideration of biblical texts' existential significance for the present. In response to the rejection of biblical significance in the late nineteenth century and the accompanying crisis of nihilism, B. H. McLean argues that the philosophical thought of Heidegger, Bultmann, Gadamer, Habermas, Ricoeur, Levinas, Deleuze and Guattari provides an alternative to historically oriented approaches to biblical interpretation. He uses basic principles drawn from these philosophers' writings to create a framework for a new 'post-historical' mode of hermeneutic inquiry that transcends the subject-based epistemological structure of historical positivism.

McNamara, Martin
Targum and Testament Revisited. Aramaic Paraphrases of the Hebrew Bible. second edition
Targum and Testament Revisited is a new edition of a text first published in 1972, now revised in light of research during the intervening period. In his introduction Martin McNamara details significant developments in the field, ending with a note on the tell-like structure of targumic tradition, with interpretations from different ages, also showing the presence of continuity in interpretation of certain passages down through the centuries of Jewish history.

The first part of the book examines the formation of targumic tradition, specifically treating the early written Targums, Aramaic as the language of the Jews, and the origin, transmission, and date of the Targums of the Pentateuch and the Prophets. Part two considers the possible relationship between certain New Testament passages and targumic tradition, including a reverential manner of speaking of God; God and creation; the Holy Spirit; sin and virtue; eschatology; and the Targums and Johannine literature.

There has been intense examination of most aspects of targumic tradition over recent decades. McNamara draws on these varied sources -- including the annotated English translation of all the Targums in the Aramaic Bible -- and offers an appendix outlining all extant Targums of the rabbinic tradition. McNamara's updated overview will be an indispensable resource for scholars of biblical and Jewish studies.

Meadors, E.P.
Idolatry and the Hardening of the Heart. A Study in Biblical Theology
The purpose of this book is to provide a biblical, theological answer to Isaiah's question: "Why, O Lord, do you cause us to stray from your ways, and harden our heart from fearing you?" Transparently, the biblical answer is pervasive, explicit, easy to understand, and interrelated to every major biblical theme. The hardening of the heart is quite simply God's disciplinary punishment for the specific sin of idolatry. Meadors' book is an exercise in biblical theology. Beginning in the Hebrew Bible the hardened heart finds rescue in the "new covenant" promises that Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Hosea prophesy. In these prohecies God promises to remove Israel's idols, cleanse the people, anoint them with God's spirit, write God's law upon their hearts, and turn the people's hearts of stone into hearts of flesh. The New Testament tells how Jesus of Nazareth activates these promises and brings them into effect in the lives of those who respond to him in faith. Paul preaches this message as well, and the book of Revelation applies this message to the historical context of the seven churches of Asia Minor, who lived with the agonizing temptation to compromise with the idolatry-laden Roman emperor cult. Meadors examines the biblical rationale for idolatry and the hardening of the heart as it unfolds in specific passages--Lev. 26, Dt. 29, Ps. 115, 135--and examines the phenomenon through the rest of the Hebrew Bible, the Gospels, the letters of Paul, and Revelation. - See more at: http://www.bloomsbury.com/uk/idolatry-and-the-hardening-of-the-heart-9780567025739/#sthash.TEci1rmE.dpuf

Called to Freedom
Van 33.50 voor 17.50

Meynet makes available in both English and Spanish his series on Biblical Rhetoric, a unique method of textual interpretation applied to important themes in the biblical and Semitic world. He posits that the concept of freedom in the "Hebrew Bible" is the guiding core of all the socio-political distinctions within Israel's religious experience and history. This original study leads us through the experience of the people of Israel in the Exodus. It guides us into a new reading of the law in the two narrative sections of the Decalogue, seeing it as an expression of the search for the authentic meaning of human freedom. He also introduces Israel's "Psalms" as hymns of freedom. This work makes an important contribution to the field of Biblical studies and is a topic that is especially relevant for modern society.

Moore, S. D. and Yvonne Sherwood
The Invention of the Biblical Scholar. A Critical Manifesto
What is a "biblical scholar"? Stephen D. Moore and Yvonne Sherwood provide a thoroughly defamiliarizing and frequently entertaining re-description of this peculiar academic species and its odd disciplinary habitat. The modern-and -biblical scholar, they argue, is a product of the Enlightenment. Even when a biblical scholar imagines that she is doing something else entirely (something confessional, theoretical, literary, or even postmodern), she is sustaining Enlightened modernity and its effects. This study poses questions for scholars across the humanities concerned with the question of the religious and the secular. It also poses pressing questions for scholars and students of biblical interpretation: What other forms might biblical criticism have taken? What untried forms might biblical criticism yet take?

Moyise, Steve
Introduction to Biblical Studies, 2nd Revised edition
This is an ideal introduction to modern biblical studies. Readers are introduced to questions of inspiration, canon and authority. This is followed by chapters on historical approaches to the Bible, such as source, form and redaction criticism. Comparisons with other literature, such as ancient flood stories or Egyptian psalms help to set the context for this. Moyise also asks such questions as 'How did we get the Bible?' and, 'why do modern versions of the Bible differ among themselves?' Moyise considers a number of approaches to the Bible. Beginning with literary criticism, he shows how texts 'speak' to readers and influence their attitudes, emotions and behaviour. This is followed by liberation, feminist and finally a variety of theological approaches used by those who consider the Bible to be sacred scripture.

Countertraditions in the Bible: A Feminist Approach
In this book, Illana Pardes explores the tense dialogue between dominant patriarchal discourses of the Bible and counter female voices. Pardes studies women's plots and subplots dreams and pursuits, uncovering the diverse and at all times conflicting figuration of femininity in biblical texts. She also sketches the ways in which antipatriarchal elements intermingle with other repressed elements in the Bible: polytheistic traditions, skeptical voices, and erotic longings.

Hermeneutics as a Theory of Understanding.
In this primer on hermeneutics, Petr Pokorn takes up basic issues in understanding from language in general to the interpretation of the Bible.
While Hermeneutics as a Theory of Understanding deals with most of the problems of hermeneutics and their role in society and impact in history, the books main aim is not to introduce new methodologies or to investigate the character of human understanding by new probes into literary or historical documents. Instead, Pokorns principal intention is to define the philosophical and theological premises of individual projects of understanding their interrelations, meaning, and function in interpretation, especially that of ancient texts such as the Bible.
Pokorns work here functions admirably both as a text for students and as a monograph that suggests new paths in hermeneutical discussion.

Heilsgeschichten.

The Unchained Bible. Cultural Apropriations of Biblical Texts
This is an exploration of the way the bible has been appropriated and continues to be appropriated in modern culture. This volume explores a number of instances of unexpected but influential readings of the Bible in popular culture, literature, film, music and politics. The argument in all of them is that the effects of the Bible continues to have an effect on contemporary culture in ways that may surprise and sometimes dismay both religious and secular groups. That the Bible was at one time chained in churches is true. The subversive misreading of this enchainment as a symbol of a book in captivity to the established church is hard to suppress, however. Yet, once released from these chains, the Bible proves to be a text that gets everywhere and which undergoes surprising and sometimes contradictory metamorphoses. The pious advocates of making the Bible accessible who sought to free it from the churches' chains are the very people who then decry some of the results when the Bible is free to roam. Over the last 30 years, this pioneering series has established an unrivaled reputation for cutting-edge international scholarship in Biblical Studies and has attracted leading authors and editors in the field. The series takes many original and creative approaches to its subjects, including innovative work from historical and theological perspectives, social-scientific and literary theory, and more recent developments in cultural studies and reception history.

According to the Scriptures. The Use of the Bible in Social, Moral and Political Questions
If something is commanded in the Bible, the command must surely be obeyed if we are to be true to the Bible. This is what many people think, especially when they hear representatives of churches today arguing about moral issues. In fact, the matter is not as simple as this, and at various periods of history, churches have had quite differing views on how biblical commandments should be understood, and on whether they can be applied to their situations, if at all. The book falls into two sections. The first sketches the history of the use of the Bible in social, moral and political questions from the use of the Old Testament in the New Testament, to the present day. The second part looks at some case studies, including human and sexual relationships, life issues, attitudes to lawful authority, and the charging of interest.

An Introduction to the Bible, 3rd ed.
This classic work is an ideal introduction to how the Bible was written, transmitted, copied and declared to be authoritative by various churches. It presents a concise and accessible guide to all aspects of biblical study: what is the Bible?; how biblical writers wrote; the making of both Old and New Testaments; the making of the Apocrypha; the canon and study of the Bible; the use of the Bible in social, moral and political contexts. Entirely revised and updated, this third edition takes account of developments in scholarship since the appearance of the second edition in 2005.

The City in Biblical Perspective
The city is an ambiguous symbol in the Bible. The founder of the first city is the murderer Cain. Jerusalem is the place chosen by God, as well as a city of wrong and injustice, and a symbol for God's future universal rule of justice and peace. Jesus apparently avoided cities except Jerusalem, where he was crucified. This book explores the archaeological and social backgrounds to cities in the biblical world and draws out the implications of the deliberate ambiguities in the biblical text. It asks whether and how the Bible can provide resources for the city today, in a world in which the majority of earth's burgeoning population is located in cities.

Verhalen over geweld, seks, straf, mishandeling, oorlog, uitsluiting. Moeten we zulke teksten negeren, doodzwijgen?

Dinahs Lament: The Biblical Legacy of Sexual Violence in Christian Interpretation
"Dinah's Lament" studies the ways Christians have read six biblical narratives about sexual violence, using biblical commentary, homilies, and devotional writings as a window into the history of the church's attitudes about rape. Schroeder analyzes the patterns of Christian interpretation from the early church through the Reformation, and shows that traditions of interpretation are often more disturbing and horrifying than the texts themselves. Her work raises important questions about the way Christian readers continue to shield the Bible from criticism and to reinforce patterns of subjugation, silencing, and violence against women. An introduction addresses the physical, emotional, and social effects of rape and sexual violence on women in the early church, Middle Ages, and Reformation, and summarizes Christian patterns of interpretation including allegorical, moral, and literal - historical approaches to the Bible. Subsequent chapters discuss early Christian accounts in which virgin martyrs were divinely protected from rape; interpretations of Genesis 34 that effectively blamed Dinah for her own rape (with the remarkable exception of Martin Luther); the importance of Christian voices, especially medieval women like Hildegard of Bingen and Hrotswitha of Gandersheim, that insisted on the innocence of rape victims and lamented the violation of women's bodies; and more.

Biblical Blaspheming. Trials of the Sacred for a Secular Age
This book explores the strange persistence of 'blasphemy' in modern secular democracies by examining how accepted and prohibited ways of talking and thinking about the Bible and religion have changed over time. In a series of wide-ranging studies engaging disciplines such as politics, literature and visual theory, Yvonne Sherwood brings the Bible into dialogue with a host of interlocutors including John Locke, John Donne and the 9/11 hijackers, as well as artists such as Sarah Lucas and Rene Magritte.

Questions addressed include:
• What is the origin of the common belief that the Bible, as opposed to the Qur'an, underpins liberal democratic values?
• What kind of artworks does the biblical God specialise in?
• If pre-modern Jewish, Christian and Islamic responses to scripture can be more 'critical' than contemporary speech about religion, how does this affect our understanding of secularity, modernity and critique?

Sparks, K.L.
Sacred Word, Broken Word. Biblical Authority and the Dark Side of Scripture
The Bible is a religious masterpiece. Its authors cast a profound vision for the healing of humanity through the power of divine love, grace and forgiveness. But the Bible also contains "dark texts" that challenge our ethical imagination. How can one book teach us to love our enemies and also teach us to slaughter Canaanites? Why does a book that preaches the equality of all people -- male and female, slave and free, Greek and Jew -- also include laws that permit God's people to trade in slaves and to persecute those of a different faiths or ethnicities? In Sacred Word, Broken Word Kenton Sparks argues that the "dark side" of Scripture is not an illusion. Rather, these dark texts remind us that all human beings, including the biblical authors, stand in need of God's redemptive solution in Jesus Christ.

Spirit and Scripture. Examing a Pneumatic Hermeneutic
"Script and Scripture" provides the most comprehensive academic treatment available of biblical interpretation in the renewal movement. This book considers the academic treatment of biblical interpretation in the renewal movement, the fastest growing tradition in Christendom today. The initial chapter surveys the history of biblical interpretation in the renewal tradition and provides a conceptual basis for the book. In Part II, six renewal scholars outline a proposal for the future of biblical hermeneutics in the tradition. These authors address certain key questions. What is the role of the Holy Spirit in biblical interpretation? What are the distinctive presuppositions, methods and goals of renewal biblical hermeneutics? Three prominent biblical scholars (James D. G. Dunn, Anthony C. Thiselton, Walter Moberly) respond to the proposals outlined above. These critical responses deepen the examination of renewal biblical hermeneutics as well as increase its appeal to biblical and theological scholars in general. The final chapter offers a synthesis and evaluation of the accomplishments of the discussion, as well as an assessment of the state of the discipline with an eye toward the future. B3141

The Bible and Asia. From the Pre-Christian Era to the Postcolonial Age
Though the Bible is a product of West Asia, its influence on Europe and the Americas has received far more attention than its complex career in the East. R. S. Sugirtharajah corrects this imbalance with an expansive new study of Asia's subversive and idiosyncratic relationship with the Bible. This is the story of missionaries, imperialists, exegetes, reformers, and nationalists who molded Biblical texts according to their own needs in order to influence religion, politics, and daily life from India to China.

When the Bible reached east and south Asia in the third century CE, its Christian scriptures already bore traces of Asian commodities and Indian moral stories. In China, the Bible merged with the teachings of Buddha and Lao Tzu to produce the Jesus Sutras. As he recounts the history of how Christianity was influenced by other Asian religions, Sugirtharajah deftly highlights the controversial issue of Buddhist and Vedic influence on Biblical religion.

Once used to justify European rule in Asia, the Bible has also served to promote the spiritual salvation of women, outcasts, and untouchables. The Bible has left a literary mark on Asia in two ways: through its influence on Asian writers and through the reinvigoration of modern Asian vernaculars when proselytizing missionaries introduced Western print culture to the East.

The Bible and Empire: Postcolonial Explorations
At a time of renewed interest in Empire, this stimulating volume explores the complex relationship between the Bible and the colonial enterprise, and examines some overlooked aspects of this relationship. These include unconventional retellings of the gospel story of Jesus by Thomas Jefferson and Raja Rammohun Roy; the fate of biblical texts when marshalled by Victorian preachers to strengthen British imperial intentions after the India uprising of 1857; the cultural-political use of the Christian Old Testament, first by the invaders to attack temple practices and rituals, then by the invaded to endorse the temple heritage scorned by missionaries; the dissident hermeneutics of James Long and William Colenso confronting and compromising with colonial ambitions; and finally the subtly seditious deployment of biblical citations in two colonial novels. This innovative book offers both practical and theoretical insights and provides compelling evidence of the continuing importance of postcolonial discourse for biblical studies.

Biblical Resistance Hermeneutics within a Caribbean Context
This work takes the view that biblical hermeneutics within a Caribbean context focus more on the meaning of biblical texts for lived realities and less on the Bible as historically and contextually conditioned and thereby ideological. Further, the work outlines the difficulties of combining biblical hermeneutics and social praxis within the context of the Caribbean and particularly within Christian communities that descend from a long history of slavery. Moreover, it examines the social and hermeneutical context of a post-independence Caribbean and poses hermeneutical questions involving text-context, oral-written and reading-practice. The historical materialist, postcolonial and contextual Bible study reading strategies are employed as tools of analysis for the following: to identify the socio-ideological interests, theological agenda and social practices that produced biblical texts

The present dizzying pluralism of "locations" - not only of ethnicity, class, and gender, but also of social and religious standpoints - presents a daunting challenge to older, mainstream interpretive schemes. In this landmark project, Segovia, Tolbert, and their fifteen other contributors have begun to measure the impact of social location on the theory and practice of biblical interpretation. This volume, and the international one to follow, signals the critical legitimation of reading strategies that supplement or modify or even in some ways dethrone the historical-critical paradigm that has dominated academic biblical studies for 200 years. It will provide immediate and enduring guidance to scholars and students sorting through the complex epistemological, social, historical, and religious questions that issue from this paradigm shift.

Werline, R.
Pray like This. Understanding Prayer in the Bible
Werline encourages us to look at prayer in the following way: to attempt to understand how prayers are tied to particular cultural and social settings. Prayers are part of and expressions of a collection of cultural ideas that have been arranged within a system that seems coherent and obvious to those writings the biblical texts. Prayers participate in and express a person's worldview. Werline shows the ways that - though many biblical prayers are familiar to us - biblical texts and contemporary readers come from different worlds. The Hebrew Bible and the New Testament contain many prayers. Large volumes have been written on prayer within a single book, or within the writings of one author, like Paul, or an individual prayer, such as the Lord's Prayer. Werline does not examine every prayer in the Bible or even write exhaustively on a single prayer. He has highlighted a few significant features of each prayer, and some of the prayers vividly exhibit the influence of a particular society's vision. For example, he examines the prayers of 1 and 2 Kings and 1 and 2 Chronicles because of the ways they are tightly tied to the authors' views of history. The writers' interpretation of history profoundly influenced significant portions of the Bible as well as the literature of early Judaism.

Hedendaagse bestsellers becommentarieren vanuit theologisch perspectief.

Eerder publiceerde hij onder meer The Ascension of the Messiah in Lukan Christology (Leiden 1997) en Judas and the Choice of Matthias (Tubingen 2004).
